Year 5

Dear Year 5 Parents and Guardians,

As we approach the end of term one, we would like to take this opportunity to thank our students for their hard work and effort this year.

Year 5 students have thoroughly enjoyed their English, math and integrated studies topics this term.

In English we have studied narrative writing. Students have explored this genre using figurative language as a writing tool. In math, students have had the opportunity to explore number patterns, addition and subtraction, shapes and fractions.

Our integrated studies topics have allowed students to explore the colonisation of Australia. They have studied the important events which took place during this time and those that shaped Australia. We explored the arrival of the First Fleet, the building of infrastructure, conflicts with Aboriginal people, the development of business and the Gold Rush event. We learnt who played a significant role in Australian history, prominent figures like Captain James Cook, Pemulwuy and Ned Kelly. We invited Iconic Performances to our campus who shared an interactive production, ‘The Colonial Experience’, which took students back to the arrival of the First Fleet at Botany Bay.

In ICT, students developed independence in the use of Microsoft PowerPoint when creating their individual projects. They developed their confidence with the tools of this program as the term progressed, which was great to see.

Have a safe holiday break, we are looking forward to another busy and engaging term.

Kind Regards,

Mr Kocdemir and Mr Zaitzev
Year Five Team
